This manager will provide leadership for Industrial Design & Human Factors in 3M Corporate Research in support of multiple business units in diverse product settings.  Individual will ensure that design concepts are consistent with business unit overall design strategy and product requirements.   This role manages a 20-person staff that provides leadership in design, analysis, customer focus, vision science, and more, across 3M.  Collaborate with scientists, engineers, marketing staff and customers to advocate design and usability trends into new product designs.

The Technical Manager role should have:

Passion for Design & Usability that sparks creativity and innovation.
1. Working knowledge and demonstrated capability to collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, industrial design, human factors, regulatory and quality functions.
2. In-depth knowledge of recommendations for final aesthetic and ergonomic solutions, and in the investigation of new materials, material finishes and techniques and conduct design research to assure optimum design solutions.
3. In-depth knowledge of human factors principles including an understanding of human performance and limitations (perceptual, cognitive etc.) 
4. Ability to convey and inspire the organization to the value and power of Design & Usability.
5. Versatility and competence in aesthetic judgment and technical comprehension.
6. Working familiarity with 3D CAD modeling and visualization, rapid prototyping technologies, design for injection molding, and integrated systems design.

1. BS/BFA , MS/MA, Ph.D. or equivalent number of years of experience in Cognitive Psychology, Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Human Factors, or related field.
2. Experience in technical people management, resource, and budget experience.
3. Experienced in designing ergonomic hand-held products.
4. Strong experience regarding colors, materials, finishes, and trends is desired

• Bachelor's Degree
• 3 years + of Management experience
• 8 years + of technical experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Degree in Cognitive Psychology, Industrial Design, Interation Design,  or Human Factors
